HONOLULU – Hawaii’s Armstrong Builders has received two national awards for its robust safety plan and sustainable building techniques from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the NAHB Research Center. The awards include:
First Place, Single Family Home Builder, Safety Award for Excellence
This award recognizes homebuilders and trade contractors who have developed and implemented exceptional construction safety programs in order to achieve exemplary safety and health in the residential construction industry. Armstrong Builders has established a safe and comfortable working environment, prioritizing safety in all phases of the construction process. In fact, the company has a safety coordinator on staff whose sole responsibility is to educate through training and encourage the creation of a sustainable safety program. Armstrong Builders’ safety program is integrated into all aspects of its operations and is anchored in the Armstrong Rolling Wrap-up Insurance Program (ARCIP), which is a contractor-controlled insurance program (CCIP) that provides workers’ compensation and general liability coverage for the on-site work of all enrolled contractors and subcontractors. The use of ARCIP gives Armstrong Builders an active role in improving, supplementing and coordinating the individual safety programs on all their projects.
Silver Award, Hot Climate Category, Energy Value Housing Award
This award recognizes builders and remodelers who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency in the design, construction and marketing of homes. Armstrong Builders has made sustainability a priority in its projects, recently completing two subdivisions that have been classified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold. Armstrong Builders incorporates green features into its projects that not only reduce the impact on the environment, but also reduce monthly operating costs for residents. Both subdivisions include green features such as solar photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting systems, dual flush toilets, high-quality insulation and low-VOC paints, flooring and carpet. Of special note in the Hot Climate Category, Armstrong Builders was able to completely eliminate the need for air conditioning by installing whole house fans. The company was also recognized for creating educational initiatives that teach homeowners how to live more sustainably and therefore save money.
“We are honored to win both of these prestigious awards, ” said James Keller, president of Armstrong Builders. “Safety and sustainability are huge priorities for our company. While we are pleased to have won these awards, we also know that when it comes to these issues our job is never complete. As such, we are always looking at how we can improve our programs.“
He added, “Our success on both fronts can be credited to a combination of effective team building and a creative approach to solving challenging safety issues and developing innovative green practices. Our successful training system, combined with a team committed to safety and sustainability, has helped us become leaders in the industry. However, we couldn’t have achieved this level of success without our trade partners with whom we’d like to share these awards.”
The NAHB/Builders Mutual Insurance Company Safety Award For Excellence (SAFE) recognizes member companies, workers and other individuals for the excellent safety programs that make them leaders in the residential construction industry. The Energy Value Housing Award is presented by the NAHB Research Center and recognizes home builders and remodelers who go above and beyond to incorporate energy efficiency into the design of their homes.
