Air Conditioning Repair Or Replacement? One HVAC Contractor Offers Insider Secrets

Replace or Repair Your HVAC?

(DALLAS)—Sometimes air conditioning repair may be a better choice for home owners who are trying to decide whether they need to get their air conditioner repaired or replaced. Many home owners have a difficult time knowing whether they should call an air conditioning repair specialist, or just replace all of their heating and cooling equipment.

"Some days it may be cheaper to have an AC system repaired," said Brad Crawford, owner of Crawford Services, an HVAC contractor in Dallas-Fort Worth. "But oftentimes, that's not the case overtime. If you repair your system and it still ends up needing to be replaced the following year, you just wasted all that money on the air conditioning repair costs."

Crawford says home owners should ask themselves these questions about the condition of their HVAC system when deciding whether to go with air conditioning repair or replacement:

How old is the system?
Crawford says that in the past 10 years, energy efficiency has jumped anywhere from 10-20 percent for heating and cooling units. This means that new, up-to-date high-efficiency equipment can provide significant savings over older HVAC systems.

"If your air conditioner or heat pump is more than 10 years old, or your furnace or boiler is older than 15, you may want to consider replacing instead of repairing," said Crawford. "Over time, you’ll be able to pay back the cost of replacement if you’re replacing an older unit.

Are there rooms in you home that are too hot or too cold?
Rooms that are too cold or too hot could be the result of poor ductwork, equipment that is not working properly, or even lack of insulation, said Crawford. He recommends that, when choosing between air conditioning repair versus replacement in this situation, people can solve the problems with just a few fixes that are not related to the air conditioning unit itself.

"Replace ductwork, insulate the rooms, use geothermal windows, or anything else your HVAC specialist can recommend," said Crawford. "But depending on the age of the house and the HVAC system, this could either be a big solution with great savings, or an expensive solution with small savings. Ask your HVAC specialist."

Is humidity a problem?
Crawford says that where he lives in North Texas, summers are brutal because of the humidity. He said that oversized AC units, inadequate ductwork, and faulty equipment can make your home too humid in the summer and too dry in the winter.

"Here again, you will want to consider the cost savings of air conditioning repair versus replacement," said Crawford.
