DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), a leading provider of kidney care services that is committed to improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), today celebrates World Kidney Day and the proclamation of “Colorado Kidney Smart Day” by Governor John Hickenlooper.
As the governor’s proclamation notes, kidney disease is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 31 million U.S. adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Most with CKD are unaware they have it, as the disease is typically symptomless until the kidneys fail and dialysis is necessary to sustain life.
“DaVita’s message on ‘Colorado Kidney Smart Day’ is simple – get educated and get screened,” said Chris Riopelle, senior vice president of DaVita®. “Many with kidney disease can avoid dialysis altogether if we catch the disease early.”
Kidney disease is diagnosed by a simple blood test. When reduced kidney function is indicated, a urine test can confirm the diagnosis. If kidney disease is discovered in its earlier stages, underlying conditions causing kidney failure can be treated to slow or stop the progression of the disease.
“At DaVita, we do everything we can to help our patients not just live longer lives, but to have good quality of life as well,” said Riopelle. “When it comes to kidney disease, focusing on early detection and intervention can make all the difference.”
