WHAT IS IT?
The Decentralized Dance Party (DDP) is a portable, battery-powered Party System.
It consists of thousands of people, carrying vintage boombox stereos, and a DJ who wears a backpack, containing an FM radio transmitter. All the boomboxes are tuned into the DJ’s master FM broadcast, resulting in a mobile, synchronized sound system.
This Portable Dance Party roams the night, generating complete awesomeness, street by street and block by block, onto buses and subways, into public fountains and beyond. Inevitably interfacing with the public, it creates an infectious epidemic of fun, a roaming Party adventure that lasts all night long!
It has No Central Audio Source and No Central Location, hence the name “Decentralized Dance Party".
WHO ARE TOM AND GARY?
Tom and Gary are two gentlemen from the future who love to Party.
They invented the DDP.
"It started with one boombox, and an idea, to transmit to hundreds more..."
In six short months, DDP attendance exploded from 20 people to 20,000 during Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics. This meteoric growth can be beheld in T&G’s "Evolution of the Decentralized Dance Party” video.
Inspired by this massive response, T&G resolved to take the DDP on the road, and did so during their 2010 “Party Safari”, a self-funded adventure that saw them sharing the joy and madness of the DDP with thousands of thrilled Partygoers in seven cities across Canada from coast-to-coast.
The DDP has also blown up online, and in the past year, this viral, flashmob-style Party Movement has spread to all corners of the globe; chapters springing up in America, Asia, Australia, Europe and beyond.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR THE DDP?
Tom and Gary are now in the midst of a second Party Safari. This one is called the “Strictly Business Tour” and the plan is to wear only Business Attire while Partying in 25 cities across Canada and the USA. Nearly 150,000 have signed on to the facebook events across both countries.
WHERE IS IT GOING AFTER THAT?:
“Our goal is to further the frontiers of Partying, bring joy to millions of people and ensure that Partying is respected, legitimized, and forever enshrined as a spiritual movement of paramount importance. This will be accomplished via the Global Party Pandemic of 2012”
“We plan to deliver the DDP to Every Single Country On The Face Of The Earth and inspire as many people as possible to create their own DDPs and ensure that this becomes an enduring global movement that touches as many lives as possible.
“It will climax on New Year's Eve 2012 when we host a Simultaneous World Dance Party, transmitted from Transnistria to everyone in the world at the same time. It will be fun. You are invited.”
WHAT IS PARTYING?
Tom and Gary’s “Party Manifesto” defines Partying as:
"Forgetting who you are while remembering what you are.”
It states further:
“It is the complete loss of the social conditioning that makes adult life monotonous and depressing and has the power to be a transformational spiritual experience.”
BUT IS IT ART?
From T&G’s website:
“The DDP is widely recognized as the ultimate interdisciplinary medium, creatively melding Music, Dance, Karaoke, Comedy, Chaos, Costumery, Adventure and Military Stratagem. Participants become performers and inhibitions are overwhelmed as we all rise together in a chaotic and joyful monument to the Human Spirit. Together, we awaken the raw and beautiful rhythm and adventure-craving instincts ingrained in our DNA that have been subverted since childhood in our sterile western cultures and our collective energy projects everyone to unparalleled heights of happiness for hours on end.
You will smile genuinely, you will make instant friends, you will lose yourself in the music and find yourself in situations so novel and thrilling that you will never forget them. The DDP is a revolutionary new type of open-source public performance art and something that truly has to be experienced to be believed.”
“This is True Partying. Partying with a capital “P”
“You’ve got Crust Punks dancing with little Asian girls to Scatman on ice rinks and crowdsurfing down main street and invading public fountains. Everyone’s freaking out and having the time of their lives. Everyone’s a performer.”
“The DDP offers an experience where people can forego their traditional identities and come together to exist as free human beings. It’s nothing like watching a live performance. There are no rules and no boundaries. You become the audio source and the entertainer. You and your friends are the show.”
This topic is further explored HERE and HERE.
WHAT ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY?:
The DDP is also unique in that it combines the seemingly antiquated technology of FM radio transmission, 1980’s and 1990’s boomboxes and 1970‘s disco mixers with modern ipods and wireless transmission technologies.
“We rescue hundreds of abandoned boomboxes that are destined for landfills, refurbish them, and get them back into the hands of crazed young people, where they rightfully belong.” Opines Tom.
A Nintendo Powerglove -worn by T&G at every Party- has even been rigged to control the ipod.
WHERE DO THEY DO IT?
Although DDPs have seen attendance numbers in excess of 20,000, Tom and Gary have never obtained permits for their Parties. (CBC's Olympic Party Report)
How do they pull it off?
“We’ve hosted 30 insane Parties from coast to coast in Canada and the USA, but there’s been no drinking tickets, fights, or any of the problems one might expect from such large, wild crowds. That’s because the prime objective at a DDP is celebrating life, enjoying music and having fun- not getting drunk and being an idiot.”
“We work very hard to create the most fun and inclusive experience possible; Parties that appeal to people of all ages, styles and backgrounds. There’s no velvet rope, no age limit, no curfew and no attitude. In True Partying, all become equals.”
“More than a Party, the DDP has proven to be a very interesting social experiment; demonstrating that thousands of people of all ages, cultures and social groups can come together to celebrate life and get crazy in our public spaces without causing any trouble. That is why the DDP is also known as “The Party Revolution”. It is a unique force that has the power to unify and inspire people in ways never before imagined.”
“We always strive to create an environment so fun and novel that it creates a sensory overload that destroys everyone’s fears and inhibitions, removing the need for the “social lubricants” which are, of course, the hallmark of traditional parties.”
“Also, encouraging respect towards people and property and especially any police we interact with has always been paramount.”
“The police respect this and recognize that the DDP is a positive, community-building endeavor and have always helped us out by keeping an eye on things and allowing everyone to have a good time.”
“It’s all laid out in our Party Manifesto"
IS IT WORTH THE RISK?
When asked if he was nervous about inviting thousands of people to dance in the streets and get crazy together, Gary had this to say:
“The only thing I fear is leading a life that perpetuates the status quo. I’m afraid to contribute to a culture where permits are required to make any sort of movement or sound or have any unconventional good times. We enjoy a right to peacefully assemble in our public spaces and it should be exercised whenever possible.”
“I fear for the future of a sterilized society that has forgotten how to have fun; a culture where everyone is afraid to express themselves and much of the populace relies on antidepressants to make it through the day.”
“That’s why I have devoted my life to confronting it all head-on via the craziest creative endeavors I can concoct. I do my best to inspire deviation from the norm and steer things in directions I believe are positive and exciting. That’s what quality art is all about”
To which he added “imho”
“We have entered the era of the flashmob. For better or worse, social media-fueled riots and revolutions are an almost daily occurrence. The DDP represents the opposing end of the spectrum and is the polar opposite of a riot. It’s a constructive, community-building rampage that bloodlessly challenges societal boundaries and redefines human borders and as long as I’m alive and breathing, the Party Revolution will continue.”
HOW ARE THE TOURS ORGANIZED?
“We set up Facebook events in a bunch of cities and go wherever we get the most enthusiastic response. We don’t even know anyone in the places we Party- it’s all word-of-mouth via social networks and our videos spreading virally. Everyone’s just stoked on the concept and excited to come together and forget who they are while remembering what they are.”
WHAT HURDLES ARE NOW FACED / HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED?
“From day one, we’ve struggled to devise a reliable financing model for the DDP and seriously depleted our savings to bring it this far.”
“But we’re excited to have discovered Kickstarter.com, a revolutionary new online crowdfunding platform. We’re using it to finance the entire Strictly Business Tour.”
“Crowdfunding enables people from anywhere on the planet to come together and fund ambitious creative projects with small donation amounts. And it’s completely decentralized, a perfect fit for the DDP.”
"With the support of our fellow countrymen, we used Kickstarter to raise the $10,000 required to fund the Canadian portion of the Strictly Business Tour."
Another $10,000 was raised to finance Party Safari USA #1 and they are currently in the midst of the final round of funding for Party Safari USA #2.
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON?
Tom and Gary are seeking a broadcast/webcast partner to create a tv/web series featuring their brazen Party exploits, including the Global Party Pandemic of 2012 and its daunting centerpiece, the ‘Stan tour (Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Transnistria).
T&G also plan to deliver the DDP to a number of international conflict zones and use Partying as a uniting force to bring about peace and harmony, if even for one night. Areas under consideration include: North/South Korea, The West Bank, The Gaza Strip, The Darien Gap, Iraq, South Africa, etc.
They are also developing a revolutionary new boombox that will allow anyone to team up and create Decentralized Dance Parties anywhere and at anytime. Tom and Gary are going to redefine Partying for the 21st century.
WHAT ELSE MUST BE SAID ABOUT PARTYING?
MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL HUMAN LANGUAGE.
DANCE IS THE UNIVERSAL HUMAN MOVEMENT.
PARTYING IS THE UNIVERSAL HUMAN RELEASE.
