The entrepreneurs and businesspeople interviewed will have made a substantial mark on business areas including sponsorship, web content management, marketing, technology and a range of other diverse industries. The combined interviews will give a fascinating insight into the business minds behind some of London’s most interesting companies, and provide a valuable resource to those who already run or are thinking of starting their own businesses.
In the first interview, the London Hotspots blog picks the brains of Stephen Morgan, Managing Director of the Squiz Group in Europe, about the company’s unique open source business model and what’s next for Squiz in the world of open source web content management.
Squiz adopts an open source business model to provide content management system (CMS) solutions to a wide variety of websites. The open source model used by Squiz means that its MySource Matrix software is available free of licence fees, so that 100% of revenue is earned through the provision of professional services and support for its products.
Interview Snapshot
Stephen on organisational challenges: “From an individual perspective, a while back I recognised that to move the company to the next level, I would have to change the way I work. I had to resist the temptation to ‘jump in’ all the time. Instead I had to take the time to devolve responsibility in a systematic way throughout the organisation. I found that very challenging but ultimately very rewarding.”
Issues facing small/medium businesses: “The tax regime is too punishing, but the opportunities for start-ups and SMEs in the UK are massive. An open business culture matched with good networking opportunities is what got us off the ground, and the UK has that in spades. I’m an Australian who brought a business to the UK with almost no money. I’ve never found any massive barriers to success here.”
The business climate in the UK: “We’ve been around for 13 years now so we’ve seen our fair share of peaks and troughs. Our business model is quite flexible and involves making organisations more flexible and efficient, so the downturn hasn’t affected us. We actually grew another 20% last year.”
