According to recent studies, nearly 44% of Norwalk 6th graders are overweight or obese stemming from poor nutrion and physical inactivity. “Fit Kids” is an evidence-based after school program from the Norwalk Health Department and the Exercise Science program at Sacred Heart University which promotes health among Norwalk’s children.
“With childhood obesity at epidemic proportions, the health of our nation’s children is a top priority for many organizations,” said Theresa Argondezzi, Health Educator at the Norwalk Health Department. “The generosity and support provided by Pepperidge Farm, its parent company, Campbell Soup, and the Campbell Soup Foundation are making it possible to impact this critical social issue and ultimately to improve the health of young people in our communities. We are extremely grateful for their support.”
This year Campbell Soup Foundation partnered with Good Sports, Inc., a nonprofit organization, to make a donation of sports equipment to a deserving community program. “Fit Kids” was chosen in recognition of the outstanding contributions that they have made to the children of Norwalk. This donation will enable expansion of the “Fit Kids” program to more schools and camps, while reaching more Norwalk students than ever before.

About Fit Kids
Fit Kids began in 2007 as a partnership between the Health Department, Sacred Heart, and Norwalk Community College. It continues to expand and improve based on feedback from Health Department partners, including the Norwalk YMCA and After the Bell, the afterschool providers through which Fit Kids is delivered. This year, more than 100 students at three elementary schools (Columbus, Cranbury, and Kendall Elementary Schools) participated in Fit Kids through these afterschool programs, and Sacred Heart University student volunteers helped to deliver the lessons at each site. The Fit Kids curriculum was designed not only to deepen students’ knowledge of nutrition and physical activity, but also to increase their confidence in their ability to make healthy choices.
