New Orleans, LA –Today, President Barack Obama visited the Gulf Coast and commemorated the 5th Anniversary of Katrina at Xavier University, in New Orleans. In response, Ewell Smith, a member of the Gulf Coast Economy: Ready 4 Takeoff Coalition and the Executive Director of Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board released the following statement:

“Today, the President made clear the federal government is engaged and committed to restoring and revitalizing the Gulf Coast region. Whether the government steps in to leverage its buying power to bolster the market for the Gulf Coast seafood industry, recognizes the talented workforce in Alabama and awards them with a federal contract to build a tanker for the Air Force, or addresses the revenue sharing issue here in Louisiana, we can unite together to establish a strong private-public partnership that will turn this economy around. I was encouraged by the President’s remarks today and hope the Obama Administration will take steps to empower Gulf Coast citizens and businesses with the resources they need to grow local economies and create new jobs.”

•Whether it is encouraging the federal government to leverage its purchasing power to ensure a robust market for the Gulf Coast seafood industry, supporting efforts to secure a $40 billion federal government contract for the construction of the KC-45 Real Tanker in Mobile, Alabama, or advocating for the acceleration of revenue sharing from offshore oil and gas development, we are united behind initiatives that will revitalize our local economies.
