Since 2002, Scott Shaffer has been teaching his high school physics students that it’s possible to make diamonds from just about any source of carbon, including people’s hair. Although his students were a bit skeptical, Scott knew that he wasn’t just teaching theory. He knew the technology and processes existed to make personal diamonds in reality: “whether it’s from old dinosaur fossils in the ground or someone’s hair clippings, carbon is carbon. When it’s compressed, the result—a pure diamond—is the same.”
Scott’s fascination with the process, and the idea of making personal diamonds to celebrate people’s stories led him to start Infinity Diamonds. Scott has the first and only retail store in the world that exclusively sells custom diamonds created from the signature carbon taken from a person or people.
An Infinity Diamond is made by distilling and compressing an individual’s carbon collected from their hair. Infinity Diamonds are as unique as the carbon creating them: their color and clarity are determined by the personal carbon used. Scott says, “if someone orders a blue diamond, for instance, their shade of blue will be different from another person who also ordered blue. Each diamond is truly representative of the person who contributed the carbon.” The personal nature of these diamonds has made the process especially attractive to couples and families looking to celebrate their stories: “creating a personal diamond is exciting for people. It’s a chance to physically unite the emotional bonds and memories they share. I’ve had a lot of couples and families create diamonds together.”
In addition to being a unique way to celebrate and cement a couple’s or family’s love, Infinity Diamonds are certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on precious gems, to be chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. Because they’re created from personal carbon rather than mined, Infinity Diamonds are eco-friendly and conflict-free.
