SEATTLE, WA - In May of 2012, special forces veteran, Mickey Grosman, a modern-day explorer, adventurer, and survivalist, will launch a 5,000 mile, year long expedition on foot along the Amazon River and rainforest of South America,
through its unrivaled beauty and its mysterious jungles - all to help raise global awareness in the fight against cancer.
Haeleum is proud to be the official shirt sponsor for this amazing adventure and is donating product for the entire team throughout their journey.
“We think this is a great test for Mickey as well as a great proving ground for our Insect Shield technical wear,” said Peter Wheeler, CMO. “Our main focus at Haeleum is to support high performance athletes and Mickey is certainly at the top of that list with this amazing expedition. Beyond that, the 'Amazon 5000 - For The Cure' is a cause I can really get behind. I lost an aunt to cancer last year and I have friends and relatives who are battling cancer today. We're glad to help Mickey and his team any way we can.”
“I’ve trained with the Haeleum shirts and am very impressed with their performance,” said Grosman. “They’re very comfortable, easy to dry and don’t stick to my body at all. The material is very good.”
Grosman’s goal for the expedition is to raise awareness and support for cancer research. Diagnosed with melanoma in 2010, he knows first hand about the challenges patients face to survive and beat this deadly disease and hopes to inspire those battling cancer to continue their fight.
When asked why trek Amazon rainforest to raise cancer awareness, Grosman's response is, "The evidence is clear that cancer treatment has been greatly enhanced by rainforest medicines. According to the National Cancer Society, 70 percent of the plants with anti-cancer properties are native to tropical rainforests. By running the AMAZON 5000 Expedition I wish to emphasis the importance in conserving the Amazon rainforest and its species, many of whom are yet to be discovered! As our foundation grows it is our goal to sponsor a student research team to do a study in the Amazon. We will select biology students from universities to go and study the plant life of the Amazon Jungle to look for anti-cancer properties and provide them the locations and resources together with our indigenous partners."
Grosman will travel south to begin his journey at the Pacific shore of Ecuador. He will cover the first 800 miles over the western and eastern Andes Mountains while traversing incredibly rugged terrain throughout the dense jungles of the Cloud Forest. Next he will use his amazing survival skills, he will travel along the mighty Amazon River and through the mystical Amazon Jungle. Upon reaching the mouth of the Amazon at the Atlantic ocean where the journey will continue southward along the coast to Natal, the widest point of South America, for a jaw-dropping total of 5,000 miles entirely on foot.
