KMA REDEFINES SACRED SPACES WITH NEWBREAK CHURCH REMODEL IN OCEAN BEACH

(SAN DIEGO) May 8, 2012—Inspired by San Diego’s contemporary architectural history, KMA Architecture and Engineering (KMA) is redefining worship spaces by bringing its modern design aesthetic to a local church.  First retained by Newbreak Church in December 2010 to design their Ocean Beach remodel, the firm has announced that construction for the two-story building, which will serve as an important urban focal point for the community, is complete.

Nestled in a residential neighborhood at 2069 Ebers Street, Ocean Beach will serve as Newbreak Church’s sixth campus alongside its other locations in Tierresanta, El Cajon, Pacific Beach, Santee and Scripps Mesa.  Exterior renovations included the removal of existing wood and brick to give the structure a contemporary facelift.  KMA also relocated the main entrance of the church and more prominently displayed it through a custom-designed trellis feature.  In addition, this reconfiguration allowed for a larger gathering area for church members.  The 6000-square-foot remodel also included a Sanctuary building with optimal acoustics, a series of new classrooms and private offices.

“It was exciting to work with Executive Pastor Robert Wachs on the redesign of what was once a traditionally modeled church to transform it into a dynamic contemporary worship space that reflects Newbreak Church’s core mission,” said Don Blair, President of KMA Architecture and Engineering.  “In order to achieve this, we focused our attention on elements such as choice of exterior building materials and the incorporation of multimedia into the Sanctuary.”

The design team consists of Don Blair, Rich Guerena, Jay Janda and Alison Warren from KMA; civil and structural engineers from Burkett Wong; mechanical and plumbing engineers from Teza Design and electrical engineers from Lopez Engineering.
