As a Principal with UHY Advisors in Atlanta, David Barton advises companies how best to manage their business and minimize their risk. He recently took that approach from his desk to the streets as a volunteer instructor teaching teens safe driving skills at the Tire Rack Street Survival event held Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds.

Simple driving errors, avoidable but common among inexperienced teens, cause the majority of fatal accidents; each year more than 5,000 youths aged 15 – 20 are involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes. Unlike traditional driver education programs based on classroom theory and simple maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations; students learn emergency braking, skid control, and how to control unintended oversteer and understeer.

A longtime racing and high performance car enthusiast who earned his competition license in 2003, Barton is an expert driver well-versed in handling cars in difficult situations. “The great thing about the Tire Rack Street Survival program is that it challenges kids to learn how to control their vehicle, rather than just operate it,” said Barton.
