The Chocolate Trail Showcases Santa Fe's Chocolate Artisans


SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO -- The Chocolate Trail offers an odyssey of edible delights, featuring four chocolate shops devoted to the ancient art of chocolate making, offering dark chocolate truffles, fudge, bon bons, beverages and more. Follow the trail as it winds through the heart of historic Santa Fe, showcasing the city's chocolate artistry and its rich history with cacao.

The ChocolateSmith

Indulgence or adventure, a visit to The ChocolateSmith is like a trip to an old-time candy shop.  Jeff and Kari Keenan make their artisan chocolate by hand, creating a bittersweet blend of dark chocolate and premium fresh, locally-sourced, organic ingredients. You can watch the crew at work in the boutique's open kitchen. Signature chocolates include red chile pistachio bark, white chocolate lemon lavender bark, sea salt caramels and chocolate pate wrapped in wax. The ChocolateSmith's chocolate is a major ingredients in Whoo's Donuts, a sister business located next door.

Entering Todos Santos is like stumbling into a chocolate fantasy, a colorful wonderland full of inventive treats, including, chocolate milagros coated in edible gold or silver, pumpkin seed toffee and decadent ttruffles with hickory smoked sea salt, tarragon and candied grapefruit peel.

Kakawa Chocolate House

With antique recipes for chocolate that have been handed down through centuries, Kakawa offers elixirs made from chocolate, exotic brews of the kind once enjoyed by Aztec warriors, Maria Antoinette and Thomas Jefferson. Organic ingredients include ancho chile, roses, hibiscus, musk and nuts, Kakawa's beverages are steeped in history. Don't miss the pomegranate or lavender truffles.

Chuck Higgins, owner of one of Santa Fe’s premier Chocolate Shops, has been making candy for more than 30 years.  His signature, handcrafted truffles include the favorites, plus, unique flavors such as Cardamom Raspberry, Jalapeno Lime and Blackberry Balsamic.  His high-quality fudge line includes  Raspberry Chipotle, Black Forest Cherry and Chocolate Lavender.  His award-winning Caramel Corns and Brittles are amazing!  With nearly 20 years at the New Mexico State Fair, his presentation in the Manual Lujan Building includes his fudge, chocolate-dipped strawberries and his famous caramel apples (around 10,000 of them); a must-go-to destination for fair goers.
