Myself and almost 2 million other Americans just received an email from Barack Obama saying, “Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer: I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.”

What’s concerning about President Obama’s newest declaration is that the last time he ran for president he was asked the same direct question and gave another direct answer: “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage.”

When Obama was asked that same direct question during an earlier campaign, he gave what we also believed was a direct answer: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.”

It’s the timing of the president’s contradictory answers to these direct questions that may be most disturbing. Each time Barack Obama changed his position, doing so just happened to benefit his political needs at that moment.

In 1996 he was running in a Democrat primary in Chicago, so supporting same-sex marriage was politically advantageous. In 2008 he was running for president so opposing same-sex marriage was critical to his successful election. Now, just four years later, campaign donations from the gay community have slowed to a trickle as compared to 2008, so he’s suddenly an active supporter of same-sex marriages, again.

Barack Obama has a history of contradicting himself when doing so is politically beneficial. His most recent reversal on gay marriage is just one of many flip-flops and broken promises.

We all remember him repeatedly comparing himself with Senator Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary by saying, “The difference between Hillary’s plan and mine is, hers is a mandate, mine is not.” Perhaps his was not a mandate at the time, but once he became president his health care plan, Obamacare, was suddenly a mandate.

Remember his repeated promises to end “warrantless wiretaps” if elected? Once elected, he continued that program and defended it in court.  He also made countless promises to “slash earmarks in half when I am president” only to sign more into law than President Bush. Who could forget or his “guarantee” of an immigration bill in the first year of his administration “that I strongly support and that I’m promoting”? Obama chose to forget.

These are just a few of the 52 broken promises and reversals of position I found with a quick check of Barack Obama’s record. How many new broken promises and reversals of guarantees are yet to come?

We, the people, must insist that our elected officials tell the truth and honor their promises, democracy deserves no less.

Anthony Holm

Anthony Holm is a committed advocate of liberty and the free market who frequently speaks against the political class—the political elites—in both parties. Holm wrote 52 REASONS NOT TO VOTE FOR OBAMA as an analysis of candidate Obama’s campaign promises juxtaposed with his subsequent actions as President. Candidate Obama burst onto the political scene capturing the hearts and minds of voters with his charisma and hope-filled promises. Once elected to office by optimistic Americans from every walk of life, President Obama seemed to quickly forget the changes he planned to make.
