NEW "BUENA SALUDT" BOOK SERIES FROM DR. JANE DELGADO AND THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR HISPANIC HEALTH TARGETS MAJOR HEALTH CONCERNS OF HISPANICS

New health book series, available in both English and Spanish editions, launches with volumes on the top two concerns of Latinos: heart health and diabetes

NEW YORK, NY - "Rather than just giving information, the goal of this series of books is to give readers a new starting point," says Dr. Jane L. Delgado about the BUENA SALUDT GUIDES (Newmarket Press, Pub Date: March 2011). "I want to help readers create a mental attitude where they feel they have mastery and control of their bodies."

As the president and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, Dr. Delgado knows first-hand the challenges of improving the health of Hispanic communities: although 1 in 6 people in the U.S. is Hispanic, too often the research, analysis and recommendations do not reflect Hispanic needs and culture.

The new BUENA SALUDT series of books (the phrase translates to "Good Health") is designed to address this, presenting the latest in health information and medical advances about individual diseases and conditions in a warm and conversational tone. With real-life stories throughout, the books are published simultaneously in English and Spanish to inform, support, and deliver the kind of caring advice that will guide a large readership towards better care of their health.

The series launches with books on the top two health concerns for the 50 million Latinos in the United States: heart disease and diabetes.

With a foreword by Dr. John C. Lewin, CEO of the American College of Cardiology, THE BUENA SALUDT GUIDE FOR A HEALTHY HEART (Newmarket Press, $9.95 paperback, Pub Date: March 29, 2011) opens with a personal story from Dr. Delgado about her mother's experience with heart disease that illustrates how cultural differences affect health. She goes on to detail everything readers need to know about the leading cause of death for all men and women in the U.S.:

 how the heart works as part of the body's circulatory and electrical systems;

 life changes to consider to avoid or slow heart disease, as part of Dr. Delgado's "10-Point Program for Health," including exercise, diet, sleeping habits, relationships, regular health care, and spiritual life; and,

 answers to the most frequently asked questions about heart disease and diagnostic tests and procedures, in an easy-to-understand Q&A format

The book also includes a resource section with tools for charting heart health and key questions to ask a health care provider about diagnosis, tests, surgery, and procedures.

THE BUENA SALUDT GUIDE TO DIABETES AND YOUR LIFE (Newmarket Press, $9.95 paperback, Pub Date: March 29, 2011), with a foreword by Larry Hausner, CEO of the American Diabetes Association, features stories of people and families living with diabetes, a condition that has touched the lives of most Hispanic families.

Countering the fatalismo (fatalism) that is part of the Hispanic culture when it comes to diabetes, this book discusses:

 the factors that contribute to developing diabetes;

 how diabetes affects other medical conditions (depression, heart disease, stress);

 Dr. Delgado's "10-Point Program for Health," including healthy eating and drinking habits to keep blood sugar levels in check, exercise, attention to medications, regular health care, and healthy relationships; and,

 facts about diagnostic tests, the endocrine system, and treatment options for diabetes, in a reader-friendly Q&A format, addressing hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, among many issues facing diabetic patients.

A resource section is also included, presenting tools for managing diabetes and key questions to ask a health care provider.

For those affected by heart disease or diabetes, the BUENA SALUDT GUIDES are inspiring and useful tools to make their lives better and healthier.

In addition, the National Alliance for Hispanic Health is also offering a BUENA SALUDT CLUB that provides members with action alerts on health, reliable and confidential health information throughout the year, referrals to community health services, and special offers and discounts. Registration is free of charge and available by calling toll-free 1-866-783-2645 or online at www.buenasaludclub.org.
