Local Leader Joins National Nonprofit Board

Washington, DC – Lisa T. Maruyama, President and CEO of the Hawai’i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO), was appointed this month to the Board of Directors of the National Council of Nonprofits (National Council), the nation’s largest network of nonprofit organizations.

In discussing the appointment, Patrick McWhortor, President and CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and Board Chair of the National Council, said, “Lisa is a proven leader and was instrumental in the fight to protect nonprofit tax exemptions in Hawai’i. We look forward to the insights and energy she will bring to the board.”

“Lisa’s background in public policy will be a major asset to our network and the nonprofits they serve as budget shortfalls in states across the country prompt lawmakers to turn to nonprofits to fill in the gaps,” said Tim Delaney, President and CEO of the National Council. “Her experience with HANO as a resource and voice for Hawai’i’s nonprofits will help strengthen state associations of nonprofits across the country.”

Lisa T. Maruyama joined the Hawai’i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations as President and CEO in September 2008. She previously served as the Executive Director of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council and as Vice President for Public Affairs at Bright Light Marketing. Her experience also includes serving as both the Public Policy Director and then Executive Director at the Mental Health Association in Hawai‘i, and, before that, as Government Affairs Coordinator at the Honolulu Board of Realtors. Her board service includes serving as a director of the Hawai‘i Society of Business Professionals, and Think Tech Hawai‘i. Lisa received recognition as one of Pacific Business News’ “Top Forty Under 40,” and was a recipient of the Daniel K. Inouye Award for Excellence in Community Mental Health Service from the Hawai‘i  Psychological Association. Lisa graduated from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and was a Pacific Century Fellow and Weinberg Fellow. She resides with her husband, Derek Minakami, and their two children, in Nuuanu.
