Notre Dame of Maryland University students are using creative expression to improve the health and emotional well-being of disabled adults at Penn Mar Human Services in Freeland. The undergraduate art majors are working with Penn Mar clients to develop project ideas and assist them in the preparation and creation of their works.
The works will be the focus of Collaborations, an exhibit at Gormley Gallery opening October 24 and running through December 2, 2011. Gormley Gallery hosts an opening reception on Saturday, October 29 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A gallery talk is scheduled for Wednesday, November 30 from noon to 1 p.m.
“The Penn Mar art program is a fabulous experience for everyone involved,” said Geoff Delanoy, director of Gormley Gallery and associate professor of art at Notre Dame. “It takes the idea of collaborative work to a great level where diverse members of a community can deeply learn from each other.”
The art therapy project was initiated by alumna Katie Gutridge ’95 and Professor Delanoy. The drawings, paintings and sculptures are composed with a variety of materials that expand and develop social and cognitive abilities of their creators, as well as their fine and gross motor skills.
Admission to Gormley Gallery is free. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (call 410.435.0100 for weekend hours). The gallery is located in Fourier Hall at College of Notre Dame, 4701 North Charles Street in Baltimore.
