Little Rock, AR—Wednesday, March 7, 2012 – Today opened the second annual Tulipfest, a month-long celebration of a spectacular tulip display and everything that the Argenta Arts District has to offer. Representatives of the Argenta Art District and North Little Rock Mayor, Patrick Hays announced their continuing partnership with acclaimed designer, gardening and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith in a press conference at North Little Rock City Hall.
Smith says, “It is so encouraging to see that this community continues to invest in creating an environment that affects the quality of life of its citizens in such positive ways. I am so pleased that along with my sponsors Van Zyverden Bulbs, Pro-Mix who provided the soil as well as to Jobe’s Organics who supplied the granular fertilizer, we’ll be able to continue this tradition every year adding to the beauty of Argenta with these garden initiatives.”
North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Hays stated, “The Argenta Arts District has been a springboard to the revitalization of downtown North Little Rock businesses. We have Allen and his sponsors to thank for contributing to the improved image and success of our downtown.”
John Gaudin, Chairman of the Argenta Arts District echoed the Mayor’s sentiments saying “it is inspiring to see what can be accomplished when the private, public and non-profit sectors all partner together.”
During the press conference it was also announced that Fit 2 Live is funding a community gardens grant program for 2012. City Council has allocated funds for grants to assist with building or improving community garden groups to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables and physical activity for residents. The grants are part of North Little Rock’s “Fit 2 Live” initiative to create a City environment that enables healthy lifestyles for all residents. Applications can be obtained from the Fit 2 Live office on the first floor of City Hall or online at www.northlittlerock.ar.gov.
The 28,000 beautiful tulip varieties featured along Main Street include many of Smith’s favorites like ‘Christmas Dream’, ‘Purple Prince’, ‘Pink Impression’, ‘Negrita’, ‘Mistress’, ‘Angelique’, ‘Survivor’, ‘Cum Laude’ and ‘Queen of Night.’ The Argenta farmer’s market plaza will be surrounded with 45 containers of blooming tulips to join the 42 beds of tulips located along Main and Maple Streets. So many photos were taken last spring when the tulips were in bloom organizers are providing a Photo Bragging Wall located outside of the Argenta Market for tulip photos to be shared with others.
The March schedule of events for Tulipfest 2012 includes a Flower & Garden Mart from March 10-31 each Saturday from 8-12 noon; an Art Walk on March 16; the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17 and daily restaurant specials from March 19-24.
