Story Pitch: IRS Correspondence Audits

What Your Audience Should Know

Many people fear a comprehensive tax audit from the IRS. But what they should really be concerned about, according to recently-released statistics, is IRS correspondence that demands more clarification of their income and corrections to math errors. Just last year the IRS performed more than 1 million correspondence audits, sent out more than 3 million math notices, and 3.5 million CP-2000 letters to taxpayers. Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) can further explain:

- The difference between a correspondence audit and a typical audit

- The meaning of CP-2000 letters

- The different types of math notices

- The action taken should people in your audience receive these notices

Contact Jim DeLuccia at (267) 675-6255 or jdeluccia@picpa.org to set up an interview with a CPA who can better explain these situations and assuage the fear and surprise your audience members may feel.
