Private Fire Resources Gear Up for the 2010 Fire Season

With the 2010 fire season already underway in the Western states, NWSA members prepare their crews, engines and tenders for dispatch.

Around the U.S., private professional wildland fire services are trained and prepared for the upcoming fire season through rigorous classroom and field work in safety, leadership, fire behavior, situational awareness and state/federal agency fire systems.

From Debbie Miley, NWSA Executive Director:
“Each year, more than 10,000 private firefighters can be dispatched to complement the federal agencies as they battle fires in the West during the summer months. We take that role seriously and commit to provide the agencies with highly qualified and cost-effective resources.”

Today, approximately 40 percent of the resources across the United States are provided by private professional wildland fire services. NWSA represents more than 200 private sector contract companies in 17 states that can field a work force of about 12,000 during the height of fire season.
