Artist Awards to Be Announced May 15

More than $200,000 will be awarded to Alaska artists

The Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards recipients will be announced Friday, May 15. More than $200,000 will be awarded to Alaska artists to allow them to experiment, complete projects, or develop their artistry more fully. Working reporters are invited to the Awards Event to find out who the distinguished recipients are, and what they plan to do with their grant funding.

The event will take place Friday, May 15, 2009, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Alaska Time in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Voth Theatre, located at 621 W. 6th Avenue in Anchorage. A simultaneous unveiling of new art at the Rasmuson Foundation Gallery of Alaskan Artists will take place in the virtual world Second Life from 11:00 a.m. PST to 12 p.m. PST. Live inworld music to be performed by Second Life musician JueL Resistance.

For the awards: One artist will be named the 2009 Distinguished Artist and will receive a $25,000 unrestricted award. Eight Artist Fellows will be named and each will receive a $12,000 award. And 17 Alaskans will receive Project Awards of up to $5,000. Recipients will include folk and traditional artists, literary artists, composers, visual artists, performance and multidisciplinary artists and crafts persons from around the state of Alaska.

The Individual Artist Awards is a program of the Arts and Culture Initiative, a 10-year $20 million investment to increase the impact of arts in Alaska. To date, the Foundation has awarded $1,216,319 directly to 167 artists; six have been selected as recipients of the Distinguished Artist Award.

In addition to this year's awardees, current and past artist award recipients will be present, as will many leaders from Alaska's arts and culture sector.
