The event kicks off race weekend for the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon. The marathon, marathon relay, half marathon and Urban 10 Miler take place on Sunday at 6 am.
The 5K distance is popular with many charities participating in the marathon's DaVita Charity Partner Program, where runners raise funds for charity. Operation TBI Freedom, which helps veterans returning home with traumatic brain injuries, had a group of veterans and active service personnel running with Joel Hunt, who is partially paralyzed from war injuries. They carried the U.S. flag the entire race.
Other charities out in force included PHAMALY, International Hearing Dog, Inc. and Denver Kids, Inc.
The race is sponsored by Bellco Credit Union and presented by Primrose Schools. It benefits the Denver Post Community Foundation.
