In Western medicine PMS is modern disease category. However in China doctors have been treating PMS for thousands of years with the acupuncture. In China they call PMS “menstrual movement disease”
When a woman has their “period” or menses it can come early, late or at any time. When this happens the women is considered to be suffering from a menstrual disease which can include heavy bleeding during the period; lack of period (amenorrhea); painful period (dysmenorrheal); on-going bleeding at odd intervals (mennorhagia/metorrhagia); endometriosis; and ovarian cysts.
There are, according to Chinese medicine doctrine and theory, a defined set of body functions that cause each of PMS symptom, on top of the more serious, life altering crushing situations described above. There are several long-time treatments available for each of these maladies. They include acupuncture or combinations of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine therapy. Direct treatment for PMS normally needs to start sometime during a patient’s 26 to 30 day menstrual cycle and is completely dictated by what and how her maladies are developing. Treatments will often include a three pronged approach including lifestyle changes, adding exercise and improving diet.
Normally the prescribed regimented treatment series for PMS and more serious menstrual maladies will cover three to four months worth of cycles, but can cover ½ a year to a year, totally dependent on how serious the patient’s circumstances. As treatment moves forward the number of days of needed treatment will decrease after each menstrual period
The outcome desired from the treatment is to give the patient skill sets and knowledge so they can eat the right of foods, develop the appropriate lifestyle and in turn stopping or reducing the effects of on-going PMS. By applying Chinese Medicine methodology including using the proper vitamins and minerals the negative effects of PMS can be dealt with effectively.
