Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to doctors on March 19, the agency received additional reports of eye infections in patients who were given Franck Pharmacy’s Brilliant Blue G (BBG) during eye surgery.
Clinicians in several states also reported to the agency that patients who were given injections of the drug products containing triamcinolone during eye surgery experienced eye infections.
Brilliant Blue G is not approved in the U.S. by the FDA and its manufacturer recalled all lots of BBG and one lot of Triamcinolone Acetonide P.F., according to a press release by the agency. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the FDA as well as local and state public health agencies are actively investigating these incidents.
