FDA Warns of Phthalates Used in Drugs

The Food and Drug Administration has released a draft guidance to discourage the use of two phthalates in both biological products and drugs because they could cause developmental or reproductive problems in humans.

According to Law360 (subscription required), the chemicals singled out in the guidance were di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Certain types of phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system in laboratory animals, leading the FDA to suspect that the chemicals would have same effects on humans.

Phthalates are synthetic chemicals that are commonly found in certain pharmaceutical formulations as plasticizers to coat pills.
