NHTSA Probes Cruze and Wrangler Fire Reports

The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that it will investigate reports of engine fires in Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Chevrolet Cruze vehicles.

The NHTSA received two reports of fires in 2011 Cruzes. In both cases, owners said the cars were moving when the fires began and both cars were completely destroyed. The agency also received eight reports of fires in 2010 Jeep Wranglers that, similar to the Cruze incidents, started while the vehicles were moving. Four Jeep owners said the fires also destroyed their vehicles.

While the fires have often caused irreparable damage, there are currently no reports of injuries associated with the fires, according to the Associated Press.

In the past, the NHTSA investigated the Jeep Grand Cherokee to determine if its gas tank placement created a potential fire hazard during a car accident.
