Patient on Pradaxa Dies From Brain Hemorrhage After Minor Injury

Clinicians from the University of Utah have reported in the Journal of Neurosurgery that a patient who was taking the blood thinner Pradaxa (dabigatran), died after a ground-level fall left him with a mild brain injury that developed into a brain hemorrhage.

According to the journal, the incident involved an 83-year-old man who fell from ground level and initially seemed stable. A CT scan revealed small areas of hemorrhage in his brain, which progressively grew worse as the hours went by. He eventually died from the hemorrhage.

The authors of the report noted that patients on Pradaxa are usually elderly and thus more prone to have issues with falling and balance. They recommended that patients and doctors become aware of the risk for fatal hemorrhaging and to rapidly asses all accidents regardless of how minor the injury may seem.
