Dr. Conrad Hamilton brings sought after surgical specialty

TUALATIN/TIGARD, OR—January 2012 -- Dr. Conrad Hamilton has joined the staff of Tualatin/Tigard-based Sports Medicine Oregon.  Dr. Hamilton is a board-eligible hand and microvascular surgeon.  In September, he returned to the Portland area after completing his RRC-accredited orthopaedic hand surgery fellowship at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center where he also completed his surgical residency.

As subspecialists, hand surgeons focus primarily on injuries from the elbow to the fingertips.  Microsurgical techniques are employed to address trauma or disease of the blood vessels or nerves anywhere in the upper extremity to the fingertips.  Dr. Hamilton has a special interest in sports injuries, fracture management, upper extremity trauma, replantation, nerve repair, flap reconstruction, congenital differences and arthritis of the hand.  “We see a lot of arthritis in the suburbs where you have more rural workers and skilled laborers who have a lot of wear and tear from hard work with their hands,” said Dr. Hamilton.   “Some of the hand and wrist injuries we see at this time, range from accidents with people cleaning their gutters, negotiating icy walkways, and putting up Christmas tree lights -- to skiing and snowboarding injuries”

Dr. Hamilton has also had experience caring for patients at a level-I trauma center treating wrist fracture-dislocations, forearm fractures, hand and digit amputations; including performing complex reconstructions using tendon grafts, composite tissue flaps, and toe-to-hand transfer.

Born and raised in Portland, Dr. Hamilton attended Catlin Gabel School.  He went on to play NCAA Division III soccer as a center at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.  He attended medical school at Oregon Health and Science University.

“Conrad expands our abilities to treat patients with complex hand, wrist and elbow problems,” said Sports Medicine Oregon partner, Dr. Kevin Murphy. “Hand surgery is an underrepresented specialty in the South Portland Metro area -- so this increases our ability to provide more comprehensive quality care to our patients.”
