TAIPEI, TAIWAN — April 10, 2012 — Urban transport specialist, Tern, today announced that its Verge Duo bicycle won a prestigious 2012 red dot design award for product design. This marks the third major international design award the company has received for its line of urban bikes since the company launched last year.

“It’s great to be recognized for the Verge Duo because we work hard to achieve clean, functional design," stated Joshua Hon, Tern vice president. “The fact that we have received three major international design awards all within a year of the launch of our company is a validation of our philosophy and objectives, which is to produce bikes for urban transport.”

This year, 1,800 manufacturers and designers from 58 countries submitted 4,515 products for consideration for a red dot award by a panel of 30 international experts. In addition to the red dot award, Tern received a Eurobike Award at the 2011 Eurobike Show for the Eclipse S11i and a Taipei Cycle Design & Innovation Award at the 2012 Taipei Cycle Show for the Verge X10. Both awards are organized by iF.

“Although the Verge Duo looks clean and simple, a tremendous amount of engineering and design effort went into it,” stated Joakim Uimonen, Tern chief designer. “It incorporates a total of seven new patented technologies and over thirty custom toolings. The finished package rides extraordinarily well, yet folds in less than ten seconds.”

Verge Duo feature highlights:
• Weight: 11.3 kg (24.9 lb)
• Folded Size: 36 × 79 × 72 cm (14.2″ × 31.1″ × 28.3″)
• Fold Time: 10 seconds
• Drivetrain: SRAM Automatix, 2-speed
• Gear Inches: 48"–66"
• BioLogic PostPump 2.0 - bike pump integrated in the seatpost

The red dot design award
The red dot design award, whose origins reach back to the 1950s, is carried out in three disciplines: ‘red dot award: product design,’ ‘red dot award: communication design’ and ‘red dot award: design concept.’ In 2011 alone, more than 14,000 entries from over 70 countries were registered. The ‘red dot award’ itself is internationally established as one of the most appreciated quality seals for outstanding designs.
