Time Warner Cable to Host Hundreds of Girl Scouts at Scout Out Event

Scouts Will Experience STEM Activities Including Television Production

(Charlotte, NC) – May 7, 2012 – More than 300 Hornets’ Nest Girl Scouts and troop leaders from six area counties will take over Discovery Place in Uptown Charlotte tomorrow night to demonstrate their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at Time Warner Cable’s 3rd annual Scout Out event. The event will take place from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

“We are happy to see that area Girl Scouts continue to have an interest in STEM and this popular Connect A Million Minds event,” said Mike Smith, area vice president of Time Warner Cable’s Charlotte operations. “This fun-filled event is a great way to connect girls to science and technology and hopefully helps inspire them to become our next generation of problem-solvers.”

Connect a Million Minds is Time Warner Cable’s five-year, $100 million initiative that addresses a declining proficiency in STEM that puts America’s children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Time Warner Cable uses its media assets to create awareness of the issue and inspires students by connecting them with hands-on, after-school opportunities to experience STEM in non-traditional ways.

Each year, Time Warner Cable plans something new and exciting for Scout Out.  In addition to all the great exhibits and activities Discovery Place has to offer, Girl Scouts will be provided with a unique opportunity to learn all facets of television commercial production from start to finish. Each troop will write a script for a 30 second commercial designed to promote Girl Scout cookie sales.  Time Warner Cable Media employees will also share information about media and television production careers.

Time Warner Cable employees designed the media literacy activity in support of the Girl Scouts’ newest Journey Leadership series, It’s Your Story—Tell It! Employees will serve as "real life topic experts" to help the girls explore media all around them—in their lives and in their world.

About TWC Connect a Million Minds
Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; “The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM career days. TWC’s national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
