Lawn Bowling Champions From Around the World Come to Orange County to Compete at the MAP International Challenge

International Tournament sanctioned by the World Bowls Association Fuels Lawn Bowlers’ Olympic dreams

From Oct 3-9, top players from around the globe will set foot on the sunny lawn bowling greens of Newport and Laguna Beach for 9th annual The MAP International Challenge. This is the only U.S. lawn bowling tournament sanctioned by the World Bowls International Federation which invites world champions to the United States.

This all male event features players from Australia, Canada, China, England, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the United States competing in Singles and Pairs events. Team USA features top Americans players from around the country, including Charlie Herbert who took home the singles trophy in 2009.

The MAP International Challenge will be held from October 2-9 at the Newport Harbor Beach LBC and Laguna Beach LBC in Orange County. All are welcomed to attend this rare opportunity to watch the best bowl it out in Southern California.

World Bowls has recently been accepted as a member of the Confederation Mondiale des Sports de Boules (CMSB) an international body overseeing the likes of Bocce, Petanque and Raffa. CMSB is already affiliated with the International Olympic Committee, taking a step forward to see Bowls played on the Olympic level. You can visit the World Bowls site at www.worldbowlsltd.co.uk to learn more.

Lawn bowls is currently experiencing a renaissance as member countries are recruiting younger competitive players, but the sport remains on the sidelines. Besides facilitating a competitive playing field for world-class bowlers, MAP encourages the induction of lawn bowls as an Olympic sport, which has potential for the 2012 London games as the country hosts a large population of competitive bowlers.

The MAP is named after Michael Ashton-Philips, a British-born Los Angeles bowler and Team USA member who passed away in 2003 after his struggle with brain cancer. Sandra Ashton-Phillips graciously sponsors this tournament in memory of her husband. The tournament continues his passion for generating awareness of the sport, and the hope for inclusion in the Olympic Games.
