Today, judging by television news, you can't have a political discussion. it has to be a debate. No, make that a shouting fest. Anger gets more airtime than reason; and in covering the Tea Party movement, the media has made devoted nonstop coverage angry protesters, most of them white men. Media analyses from all quarters, including NPR, show that men's voices get privileged in news coverage. The way the Tea Party is covered has elevated white men's voices over all others, allowing a single subset of America's diverse population to define the American story.
To counter this growing trend, the Women's Media Center (WMC) is pleased to announce the launch of a much-needed She Party - a place for serious discussion, celebration of women's political power, and a gathering of smart women (and men) via social media. Every Wednesday afternoon from 3pm to 6pm (EST) this summer, we invite women nationwide to join together for an online social networking event on Twitter using the #SheParty hashtag. At these virtual happy hours, staff and friends of the Women's Media Center (@womensmediacntr) will lead a live tweet chat on issues including Tea Party and the media politics of anger.
