Town takes one step closer to Snow King Sports and Events Center renovations

(Jackson, Wyo.) - Yesterday at the Town of Jackson Council Workshop, town officials voted 4-1 to move forward with the renovations for the Snow King Sports and Events Center. The proposed enhancements to the building include an new ice system, an enhanced lobby, the construction of two new rooms in the mezzanine area, and improvements to the food beverage services. The total cost of the project is estimated at $2,151,256, broken down for the following improvements: - Ice and Floor Improvements: $1,398,420 - Conference Enhancements: $500,000 - Food Service Enhancements: $252,836 To fund this project, town documents state that, “The Wyoming Business Council has provided a $500,000 community enhancement grant, and a $1,201,256 loan to help fund this project. This loan would carry an interest rate of 1 percent and have a term of 30 years.” During the meeting, Councilman Jim Stanford moved to “Direct staff to move forward with the proposed improvements to the Snow King Center, prepare the necessary documents to implement this project and present those documents for the Councils approval at the next available Town Council meeting, including a range of options for financing the project.” After the motion, Councilman Bob Lenz brought up the debt as an issue. “I won’t support it,” said Lenz. “I think it is premature. I have been here eight years and this is the first time we have had to borrow money that has to be paid back by the general fund.” He recommends this project be on a SPET ballot in August. “This is an economic engine for the community,” said Mayor Sara Flitner in favor of moving forward with the project. At the end of the session, the council voted 4-1 to move forward with the project. The timeline for the renovations includes breaking ground in March with completion scheduled for August prior to the Western Design Conference.
