Lack of seat belt use cited in fatal crash east of Rock Springs

(Rock Springs) - A fatal crash east of Rock Springs on November 19 has resulted in the death of 33-year-old Rock Springs resident Hannah M. Mayfield. The crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 80 near mile post 110 approximately three miles east of Rock Springs. Mayfield was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber eastbound on I-80 when she failed to properly negotiate a right hand curve in the highway and drifted off the interstate to the north. The Dodge was overcorrected back onto the highway crossing both lanes of I-80 eastbound. During the overcorrection, the Dodge collided with a trailer being pulled by an eastbound Freightliner traveling in the right lane of I-80 east. The glancing blow with the trailer caused Mayfield to overcorrect the Dodge to the left and leave the highway into the median. Once in the median, the Dodge tripped and rolled multiple times. Mayfield was ejected during the crash as she was not wearing her seat belt and sustained fatal injuries on scene. The driver of the Freightliner, 55-year-old Memphis, Tennessee resident Michael Strayhorn, was uninjured. Alcohol use is being investigated as the contributing factor in this crash. Hannah Mayfield marked the 136th highway fatality in Wyoming for 2015. There were 135 fatalities during this same time period in 2014. #buckrail #news
