Partnering to tackle domestic abuse: Free community seminar tomorrow

(Jackson, Wyo.) - Domestic abuse is an issue that impacts an entire community -- from the victim, to law enforcement and religious organizations. To address this community issue, Reverend Doctor Marie M. Fortune, founder and Senior Analyst at the FaithTrust Institute, will be leading a free multi-faith training and community lunch and keynote tomorrow at Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole. “People in crisis often look to their faith leaders for guidance and assistance,” explains Rev. Dr. Fortune. “There is great need to strengthen collaboration between faith communities and secular organizations in order to improve community-wide approaches to ending violence against women.” There will be a workshop from 9 - 11:30 a.m., lunch and keynote address from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Topics will include enhancing response to victims and abusers, best practices for safety, identifying signs of abuse, understanding tactics for control, resources for referrals and training to continue dialogue with other leaders, counselors and secular organizations. “Religious communities are extremely meaningful to many people,” said Sharel Lund Love, Executive Director of Community Safety Network. “This is a wonderful opportunity to help those communities understand the dynamics of domestic violence and the important role they can play in keeping victims safe and helping connect them to other resources.” "Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune is an internationally recognized expert, with a firm understanding of the variety of scriptural and ministerial concerns for faith professionals, helpers and communities," Love added.
