BTNF proposes road and trail updates for the Middle Greys Project Area

(Afton, Wyo.) - The Greys River Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest would like to improve the way vehicles are managed within the Middle Greys Project Area, near Afton. The proposal, which is now available for public review and comment , was developed in cooperation with public stakeholders, including Stewards of the Greys, Western Wyoming Trail Riders, Forest Trails Preservation Council, Wyoming State Trails Program and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The Middle Greys project area is approximately 4-miles wide and 11-miles long and includes lands west of the Greys River Road (FS #10138) on the east slope of the Salt River Range, extending from Meadow Creek on the north to South Three Forks on the south. The Greys River Ranger District is proposing various changes to the current designated motorized vehicle use system and, if approved, would implement the changes in multiple phases. Two Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) loops and necessary connector routes would create a network of over 50 safe, sustainable and family-friendly trail miles separate from the busy Greys River Road. In addition to high volume roads suitable for passenger vehicles, the existing motorized travel system includes 187-miles of rough, low-volume roads well-suited for larger off-highway vehicles, 97-miles of motorcycle trail, and approximately 35-miles of trail open to vehicles 50-inches or less in width. “The Bridger-Teton National Forest wants to provide better public service with a focus on OHV’s 50-inches or less in width, by designing a motorized travel network that reduces the potential for resource damage while offering a quality riding experience to our users,” said Acting Greys River District Ranger Adriene Holcomb. “One of our goals with this project will be to include clear and navigable routes that encourage riders to stay on the designated system.” The complete scoping document can also be found online at h ttp:// A public Open House on this proposal will be held from 5 - 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Alpine Civic Center just off Highway 89 in the town of Alpine, Wyoming. *Feature Photo: Greys River Valley on the Greys River Ranger District. h/t Forest Service / Pitchengine Communities* #buckrail #news
