Old Fashioned Cutter Races take over the Lincoln County Fairgrounds

(Lincoln County, Wyo.) - This Saturday, the Lincoln County Fairgrounds hosted the All American Cutter Races & Old Timers Invitational. A Cutter Race is an event held on a quarter mile track, where two horses pulling a wheeled chariot with driver, blast out of gates and race, side by side, down the fairgrounds dirt track. Cutter Races originated on the streets of Thayne, Wyoming in the 1920s as a way to pass some time during the long winter months. The small sleds were called "cutters" and have evolved into highly specialized chariots. The races are fast, adrenaline-spiked competitions led by teams of horses that want to run and drivers who want to win. The day's best time, 22.90 seconds, was celebrated by Driver Corallia Robinson, driving the team sponsored by T.J. Construction. Women are the minority as drivers in Cutter Racing. She and Betty Williams, driving the Leather and Lace team, are breaking into the male-dominated sport. "My boys and I are getting this figured out," said driver Corallia Robinson, referring to her racing horses. She and her husband Johnny Robinson work side by side caring for the horses, harnessing them up, and cooling them down once the race is finished. Their daughter Clara spends the day with Mom and Dad, keeping herself entertained by playing in the snow, running the Kids' Foot Race, and watching the horses run. Benefiting the Shriners and the good work they do for kids, the weekend event is the biggest tailgate party of the year.
