JHHS speech and debate continue undefeated streak

(Jackson, Wyo.) - The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team earned their fourth first place finish of the season at the Kelly Walsh Invitational, held January 15-16 in Casper. Jackson earned their first place finish by scoring 50 cumulative points as compared to the 29 points scored by Cody who finished second in 3A. 26 schools competed in the tournament that saw over 500 individual entries. Extemporaneous Speaking proved to be a very successful event for the Jackson squad with Ellie Dunn reaching semi finals while Daniel Pepper went on to place 6th, Forest Tran placed 5th, Walter Thulin placed 4th, and Tristan Wagner took home 1st place honors in the category. Tran and Wagner went on to tie for third place in Public Forum Debate while Dunn tied for fifth in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Bella Wood placed 1st in Humorous Interpretation with her rendition of “Controlling Interest” by Wayne Rawley. Sophia Andrikopoulos finished 3rd in the event with her interpretation of “Drop Dead Gorgeous” by Lona Williams. Nancy Garcia placed 6th in Dramatic Interpretation, performing, “The Property Known as Garland” by William Van Zandt. Sloane Gordon earned 2nd place in Poetry Interpretation. Leila Sandlin finished 5th in Program Oral Interpretation, an event new to Speech and Debate which uses a combination of Prose, Poetry and Drama. With a spotlight on argumentation and performative range, Program Oral Interpretation focuses on a student’s ability to combine multiple genres of literature centered around a single theme. “I am extremely proud of the successes of the Jackson team. It is a misconception that Speech and Debate is an individual activity; in fact, strength in our team comes from the unity and bond between members. We have found great successes so far and I look forward to the rest of the season," said Coach Londe Gagnon. *Feature Photo: h/t JHHS Speech and Debate Team / Pitchengine Communities* #buckrail #news #whatshappening
