JHHS Speech and Debate takes second at Mustang Classic

(Jackson, Wyo.) - The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team maintained its successful season, earning second place at the Mustang Classic, held at Natrona County High School in Casper January 29-30. This meet attracted 32 schools with close to 800 total entries. Cody earned first amongst twelve other 3A schools. Jackson’s second place finish was achieved with only half the team in attendance. This meet is a precursor to the State meet next month, finding nearly all Wyoming programs in attendance in Casper. Aaron Trauner teamed with Mataya Foster to place third in Public Forum Debate out of 51 entries. The team explored the issue of whether or not economic sanctions are reducing the threat Russia poses to Western interests. Trauner also performed well in Congressional Debate, placing fourth in his chamber, missing out on qualifying for the final rounds by one placing. Sloane Gordon placed an impressive second in Poetry Interpretation, an event with 105 total entries. Leila Sandlin tied for 14th in the same event. “Natrona is one of the hardest meets all year, but everyone is proud of the effort they put in and are now more eager than ever to start winning again. This meet really brought us all closer as a team.” said Coach Londe Gagnon. Emma Harrison and foreign exchange student Andrea Martinez tied for 14th in Original Oratory amongst 66 other competitors in the event. “Students needed to be near perfect in preliminary rounds to advance. The scores many of our team earned would have advanced them to culminating rounds at any other tournament of the season,” said Coach Londe Gagnon. *Feature Photo: h/t JHHS Speech and Debate Team / Pitchengine Communities* #buckrail #news
