JHHS continues to dominate Wyoming Speech and Debate

Jackson, Wyo.) - The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team added a seventh victory to their successful 2015-2016 season with a first place finish at the Star Valley Speech Tournament, held at Star Valley High School, February Friday and Saturday. The Jackson team, under the coaching of Londe Gagnon and Peggy Gagnon, had 39 individual final advancements. Jackson won the tournament by earning 163 sweepstakes points while second place Natrona County earned 78 points. Five schools attended the meet. Team captain Bella Wood had a very triumphant meet with a first place finish in Humorous Interpretation and a second place finish in Original Oratory. Emma Harrison, Andrea Martinez, and Sloane Gordon also found success in Original Oratory by finishing 6th, 5th, and 4th respectively. Kyler Arriola earned a 3rd place medal in Humorous Interpretation while Chase Harward earned 4th in the same event. The Jackson Extemporaneous squad had another successful meet, “closing out” the finals of the event with all top five finishers being from Jackson. Team captain Tristan Wagner placed first with Ben Scher, Ellie Dunn, Daniel Pepper, and Forest Tran following in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. Wagner went on to find great success in Impromptu Speaking earning 1st place. Pepper and Dunn also took home top honors in the event with their 4th and 5th place finishes. The debate events again proved to be strong for the Jackson squad this weekend. Pepper and teammate Aaron Trauner won PF Debate debate for the second straight meet, tying for first place with fellow Jackson teammates Shoshana Sangros and Samantha Smith. Wagner and Tran, along with Jackson teammates Scher and Hayden Collins, tied for third in the same event. Dunn went on to place 2nd in LD Debate arguing both sides of whether or not the US should promote democracy in the Middle East while Arriola placed third in the event. Trauner won first place in Congressional Debate. Collins placed 5th and Sangros placed 6th in the same category. Nancy Marquina achieved success in Dramatic Interpretation with her third place award. Harward and partner, Rachel Garrett took home a second place medal in Duet Interpretation while Adrienne Sugarman and Alisha Vinson finished in 4th place. Smith placed third in Program Oral Interp and Leila Sandlin earned second in the same event. Mataya Foster finished strongly in second place in Informative Speaking while Harrison achieved first in the event. Gordon continued her successful season in Poetry Interpretation earning 3rd place.
