Local schools celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss

(Jackson, Wyo.) - "You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so…get on your way!" - Oh, the Places You'll Go (1990). Today, March 2, is the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel of the famous Dr. Seuss. Local schools and even the library are celebrating his birthday with strangely colored foods, goofy drawings and, of course, lots of reading. Jackson Elementary School has been celebrating Dr. Seuss all week. According to JES Principal Scott Eastman, Dr. Seuss' birthday is just one part of Read Across America week. "We will be serving a Dr Seuss themed lunch and having birthday cookies to celebrate the day. We will have some special friends (Pete the Cat and Wild Thing) here to help out in the lunch line," said Principal Eastman. Additionally, kids wore stripes as a way to celebrate Dr. Seuss. "2nd graders are taking part of our first annual illustrator contest and we're also in the midst of our annual read-a-thon fundraiser," he added. "Friday, myself and another teacher are acting out 'Green Eggs and Ham' at all lunches. Green eggs and ham happen to be on the menu that day as well." Wilson Elementary School did crafts and read books to celebrate Dr. Seuss. On Saturday, the Teton County Library will host its annual annual Seussical Celebration. Beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, children ages 12 and under and their caregivers can enjoy a special storytime featuring Dr. Seuss’ picture-book classic, “Green Eggs & Ham.” Then kids can dive into Seuss-themed games or a truffula-tree pencil craft. To finish the fun, the 2004 movie “Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat” will be screened in the Ordway Auditorium. The library also will be giving away copies of “One Fish, Two Fish,” while supplies last. Light refreshments will be served.
