What you need to know about the library's new child policy

(Jackson, Wyo.) - Last week, the Teton County Library Board approved a recommended policy change to the Library Policy for Children. In December 2015, a proposed policy revision was presented to the Library Board and was opened to public comment for 60 days, starting on January 6, and ending March 2. In that time, the Library Board received more than 50 comments from community members. At last week's meeting, Library Director Valerie Maginnis explained to the Library Board the requested procedure for enforcing this policy. These procedures include provisions for children parents or guardians who cannot be readily contacted. Maginnis noted that the safety of the child is the first priority and that the intention from staff is to always be mindful and sensitive to factors outside of a child’s control, which often dictate a parent or guardian’s availability. Here is what you need to know about the new policy: 1. Parents or caregivers are responsible for the supervision of their children at all times. Children under 8 years of age may not be left unattended at the library. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a caregiver who is at least 12 years of age. If a child under 8 years of age is left unattended during or after library hours, parents will be notified. If parents cannot be notified, police will be called. 2. Children behaving in an unsafe, disruptive or disrespectful manner will be asked to leave the library. Repetitive misbehavior may be documented in an incident report and may result in loss of library privileges. 3. Parents and guardians are responsible for their children’s use library resources and materials. This is not the library’s responsibility. 4. Children or their caregivers must sign up for use of designated library resources and materials, and time limits must be respected. The policy will be open for public comment for 45 days. Library staff plans to implement the policy on September 1, 2016. *Feature Photo: Afterschool in Teen-Children's Wing. h/t Teton County Library / Pitchengine Communities * #buckrail #news
