Tom and Catherine Holland to take over Wilderness Adventures

(Jackson, Wyo.) - Longtime Jackson residents Mike and Helen Cottingham have announced that Tom and Catherine Holland, of Jackson, have taken over as directors and owners of Wilderness Adventures. The Cottinghams founded Wilderness Adventures forty-three years ago, in 1973 with ten students participating in an eight-week backpacking and rafting program in the Rockies and Northwest. In 1975, they moved their base from Cincinnati to Jackson Hole. The couple pioneered the concept of a wilderness travel program for teens, emphasizing the development of group leadership skills through challenging outdoor adventures in a wide variety of pristine environments. The program grew steadily over the years and today operates domestically in seventeen federally designated wilderness areas and twelve national parks from Alaska to Maine and internationally, on six continents. Their alumni base of 25,000 includes an impressive list of leaders in their fields as well as numerous second generation legacy students who have followed in their parents’ footsteps. The Hollands approach Wilderness Adventures from a personal place of appreciation for the program. Tom’s career in outdoor education, marked by his tenure as an award-winning high school teacher, former executive director of Teton Valley Ranch Camp, and national spokesperson for the summer camp industry, began with his summer as a Wilderness Adventures student in the Jackson Hole area. A truly life-changing experience, with his Teton trip, Tom planted the seed for his career to come in youth development and education, a vocation he shares with his wife. As a registered dietician and former summer camp director, Catherine has worked closely with children and families on matters of health. Catherine and Tom are the proud parents of four children: Madeleine, Maggie, Lydia and Johnny. Tom’s most recent role, as Chief Executive Officer of the American Camp Association, (a 12,000 member organization of 2,600 summer camps based in Indianapolis), speaks to his far-reaching commitment to youth development. With a strong voice in the field, he regularly addresses national and international audiences and frequently contributes to national education publications. He holds a BA in secondary education, as well as a MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Catherine holds a BS in nutrition and dietetics from Saint Louis University, completing her dietetic internship at Oregon Health Sciences University. “Helen and I feel extremely confident that Tom and Catherine will grow Wilderness Adventures in new and exciting ways, while continuing to conduct the program according to the highest standards of professionalism that parents expect from Wilderness Adventures,” said Mike. *Feature Photo: (L to R) Tom Holland, Catherine Holland, Helen Cottingham and Mike Cottingham. h/t Tom Holland / Pitchengine Communities* #buckrail #news
