JHHS runner Anna Gibson places 12th in national race

(Jackson, Wyo.) - Last weekend, Jackson Hole High School's Anna Gibson traveled down to North Carolina to compete in the mile run at the New Balance National Outdoor Track Championships. Competing against some of the best runners in the nation, Gibson took 4th in her heat and 12th overall. She completed the mile race in 4:53. "I don't think a girl from Wyoming has broken 5 minutes since the 1990's," said JHHS Cross Country and Distance Track Coach Jeff Brazil. The New Balance National Outdoor Track Championships is an invite-only race. Gibson qualified by running a 5:03 mile in Cody during this past track season. "She was in an earlier heat and ran like a veteran," said Brazil. "She paced herself smartly through 3 laps, running around 10th and keeping everyone in her sights. With 300 to go, she changed gears, running a final lap at about 67 seconds." Gibson was a member of the 3A state championship Cross Country team in the fall and placed 3rd in the state championship race. She was state champion in the 3A state Nordic 10K classic this winter and was named to the 3A All-State Nordic Ski team. In Spring track, she was 3A state champion in the 1600, 3200 and 4x800 relay. *Feature Photo: Anna Gibson after the race. h/t Matthew Chorney /
