David Corban Architecture Wins 2019 Metal Architecture Design Award

The Honor Recognizes Their Groundbreaking Work on Celebration Park in Naples

Naples-based David Corban Architecture has been granted a prestigious award for their work on Celebration Park by leading industry publication Metal Architecture. Architects throughout the United States and internationally are eligible, with current and prior recipients including such preeminent firms such as Studio Gang and SOM, both out of Chicago, and SHoP and Steven Holl, each located in New York City. In 2019, only 6 winners were selected from over 150 entrants. David Corban Architecture is the only winner in the state of Florida and throughout the entire east coast of the United States.

According to the announcement from Metal Architecture, “The honest expression of the structure, and the simplicity of the space, led the judges to award it the 2019 Metal Architecture Design Award in the Natural Metals category.”

David Corban worked closely with owner Rebecca Maddox to devise a gathering place that would be unique to and seamless with Southwest Florida. Consistent with both Corban’s and Maddox’s goals, the project was intentionally located in a community redevelopment area (CRA). Their objective was to create a highly accessible and welcoming destination, based in thoughtful and sustainable design. A testament to their vision, from its first opening in November 2018, Celebration Park was fully embraced by locals as a must-visit establishment for food, drink, and coming together.

Materials were strategically chosen to complement the environment, creating a structure that is light, durable, and in visual harmony with its surroundings. A secondary, key focus was to build in a way that would be ecologically resilient. Corban notes that the open roof mimics architectural designs historically employed by native Floridians and Florida Crackers that optimize airflow. The integration of 100 percent recycled steel, permeable pavers, native landscaping, and a mangrove preserve successfully evokes the natural setting.
