Financial management. Two words that sound quite sexy as long as we’re not responsible for the bottom line. As a business member you love it, but if it isn’t your profession or secret weekend habit then most likely you prefer to delegate. Or avoid. Or put out fires. Or sweat it out with your department and board for a month building that magical spreadsheet predicting the future. And even if you’ve managed to score the savviest of bookkeepers, leveling the playing field with some basics will quickly put you at the top of their favorite client list. Here’s how to master your books. Pull out your calendar and mark off October 13 and 14 and get excited to get off the sidelines of your fiscal game. The Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosts and facilitates a nationally recognized Profit Mastery class for anyone invested, impacted, or curious about their business’ (or soon-to-be business) financial health. Two weekdays, 8am to 5pm, for a nominal cost (includes lunch!) at the Lander Library. Sign up online or by phone for a normal-human-friendly (read: accessible) high-impact financial management boot camp. Want to improve cash-flow? Want to know (or dust off) what the difference is between “cash-flow” and “profit” and “benchmarks” and “margins”? How about building some handrails to know if you’re actually below the fiscal waterline (when you suddenly feel like you’re drowning when that repair bill comes in)? The Profit Mastery website describes the seminar as such: “The most successful businesses have found that the key to long-term success revolves around effective financial management. Through case studies and a down-to-earth style, experience this remarkable powerful program: understand why and how to benchmark your company performance; establish the difference between “making a profit” and “having cash” and how to do more of both; create effective, practical plans to improve the financial health of your business. The format is a combination of video presentation by a leading expert, Steve Lefever, case studies, and facilitated discussion.” It even comes with a comprehensive workbook. What adult doesn’t love a solid, bound copy of fiscal exercises, guides, and tools to arm you for confident, improved business performance? One of the most prevalent issues we hear from our chamber business members is increased revenue and wish-lists such as: I want to remodel and have a showroom; I want to actually go on vacation at some point in my life; I would love to hire some part-time help; I wish I had more fluid inventory; I want to contract out mowing my lawn every two days—all wants and needs not really sticking somewhere in the future landscape. This Profit Mastery class is catching you up on basics, identifying benchmarks, making proactive decisions, and quickly launching you into mastering your own profit. Capacity is limited for this class and we encourage early sign-up before enrollment closes. We are certain you’ll leave excited about your next business moves in 2016.
