BREAKING: Verdict in for attempted murder trial

A jury of six men and six women have convicted 46-year-old Terry Schmuck of trying to kill his estranged wife last May in Kinnear. The jury found him guilty of attempted second degree murder and made the announcement at 2:30 p.m. This is down-graded from the attempted first degree murder charge that the state was attempting to prove. The primary difference is that first degree requires premeditation. Second degree means that in the moment, Schmuck was trying to kill Cindy Schmuck but that he hadn't necessarily planned on doing so. For this conviction, Schmuck will serve at least 20 years in prison and up to life. A formal sentencing hearing will be set for some time in the coming months. Attempted first degree murder would have been punishable by a minimum life in prison or up to life without parole. The jury's verdict came within three hours of deliberation after a week-long trial. #county10 #news
