Lander Schools to recreate school safety committee

Fremont County School District 1 Business Manager Travis Sweeney told the school board this evening that he is wanting to recreate the district's safety committee and get it operable again. The board said they were glad to see the effort come back. One of the goals for reconvening the committee, Sweeney said, was to note that while each school will have unique plans for their facility, but to make all the plans as similar as possible to make response easier for emergency crews. Sweeney said the committee fizzled out a couple years ago, shortly after he arrived. "I'm working with several members of our staff and community to get that process going again," he said. Sweeney said he'd like the committee to include himself, Superintendent Dave Barker, all of the school principals, the transportation department, Lander Police, Fremont County Sheriff, Lander Volunteer Fire Department, SageWest, and Fremont County emergency management. Trustee Linda Barton said she'd like to have a representative from the after school programs involved as well. Chairman Brett Berg said he liked the list, but urged Sweeney to keep the size of the committee as small as possible. He said the previous iteration of the committee had more than 30 people involved, and it resulted in "unwieldy" and inefficient meetings. #county10 #news
