Riverton's landmark siren about to be retired

A Riverton landmark may be disappearing soon. The Riverton Fire District's Siren, located on top of the old City Hall building in the 300 block of East Washington, is being replaced by a new modern electronic version. The old city hall building was recently sold to a private individual, and the siren will apparently be removed. It's been serving the city in the location for the past 65 years, according to Mayor John Lars Baker. There's a parcel of land there where the new siren would be placed," he said. The mayor also indicated the new siren would be capable of different alert tones. At this point, there is no timetable to remove the old siren. *Feature Photo: The 65-year-old siren sits atop the old city hall building, which was recently sold.
