Last Call: Hundreds honor Fallen Firefighter in Solemn Ceremony Saturday

Hundreds of firefighters from around the region, a procession of fire apparatus, a combined pipes and drums, firefighters and military honor guards saluted Deputy Chief Clarence "Speed" Hartbank's memory today at a solemn memorial ceremony in Pavillion. [image: Inline image 1] *The "Arches of Honor" - The Riverton and Lander volunteer fire departments' respective Ladder Companies. (Pitchengine Communities)* Hartbank died last week from injuries he suffered in a fire on September 19, 2015. He had been hospitalized at the Swedish Medical Center's Burn Unit in Denver since the day of the accident. A procession of 76 units of fire apparatus from around the state and region began at the Morton-Kinnear Fire Hall and followed Hartbank's command vehicle which contained his cremated remains seven miles to the Wind River High School gymnasium, where the funeral was held. (Pitchengine Communities) * Among the speakers today was Wyoming State Fire Marshal Lanny Applegate, who spoke personally of his long friendship with Hartbank when Applegate served as a firefighter and department administrator in Lander and as a former Fremont County Commissioner. At times choking back emotions, Applegate gave special thanks to Denver Firefighters who visited Hartbank every week in the hospital and assisted the family in Denver. (Pitchengine Communities) * Fremont County Fire Protection District Chief Craig Haslam eulogized Hartbank and spoke of his fire service, his military service in the Navy and his dedication to his family. Deputy Chief Dan Oakly read the Fireman's Prayer. A Bell Ceremony was held, with a ceremonial silver bell being run for three sets of three peals each followed by the Casper Fire, Rapid City Fire, and Lander Fire Pipes and Drums playing "The Bells of Dunblane." [image: Inline image 5] *Fremont County Chief Craig Haslam delivered the eulogy. Following, Deputy Chief Dan Oakly read the Fireman's Prayer. (Pitchengine Communities) * Presentations to Speed's widow Linda and his family were made that included a maquette bronze of a firefighter, the Deputy Chief's service helmet and, following Military Honors by the Fremont County American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, a folded American Flag honoring Hartbank's service in the United States Navy. A Last Alarm broadcast by the Fremont County Sheriff's Department Dispatch Center for "County Fire Two" was followed by the playing of Amazing Grace by the Pipes and Drums, a Marine Corps League Honor Guard salute of 21 rifle volleys and the playing of Taps. [image: Inline image 6] *Fremont County Fire's Battalion 8 Chief Rocky McWilliams rang the ceremonial Silver Bell during at Last Call. (Pitchengine Communities) * In closing, Fremont County Fire's Ron Wempen read a letter from the family thanking members of the fire service and the community for the support they received after the accident. It was noted that over 400 cards and letters were sent to Hartbank's hospital room.
