(Riverton, Wyo.) - Central Wyoming College’s theatre department is set to perform “The Pirates of Penzance” Feb. 25-28 in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center main stage. Performances will be at 7:30 pm Thursday-Saturday with matinees starting at 2:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. With 25 actors, three choreographers, a director, music director and ten musicians this comic operetta, written by Gilbert and Sullivan in 1879, will enchant the audience with its witty and whimsical lyrics. “I am continually amazed at how funny a play written in 1879 can be,” said Mike Myers, director and professor of theatre. “The humor is so fresh and contemporary, it seems like it was written yesterday by Tina Fey. And the music is incredibly beautiful.” The play opens on the day that hero Frederic, played by Andrew Thornton, turns 21 years old. Frederic was inadvertently apprenticed as a child to a pirate instead of a pilot because his hard of hearing nanny, Ruth, played by Marissa Selvig. He finds piracy distasteful and intends to exterminate the pirate band now that his apprenticeship is over. As he sets out into the world, Frederic, who has never seen a woman other than Ruth, immediately encounters the many daughters of Major-General Stanley, played by Nathaniel Esposito, and falls in love with one, Mabel, played by Courtney Olsen. The plot thickens with the pirate king, played by Sean Thornton, points out that Frederic’s apprenticeship has not ended due to that fact that his birthday falls on Feb. 29, in a leap year. Frederic’s sense of duty compels him to remain a pirate and battle with the forces of law and order.
